The Evolution of Track Munqui Racing: A Logo Transformation Story

It all started with a message in January. Kath had seen a Facebook post I put out about our logo design services at Pro-Digi Digital Design, and she had an exciting project in mind. Her husband, Andy, is a passionate sidecar racer, and as a surprise for Valentine's Day, she wanted to update his logo.

For those unfamiliar with sidecar racing, it’s an adrenaline-fueled motorsport where teams of two—one driver and one passenger—race on high-speed motorcycles fitted with an attached sidecar. Unlike traditional motorcycle racing, the passenger plays a crucial role in shifting their body weight to maintain balance and optimise cornering speed. It’s a thrilling, dynamic sport that requires absolute coordination and trust between teammates.

The Origins of Track Munqui Racing

Andy’s racing brand, Track Munqui Racing, is rooted in his nickname—“Munqui.” This moniker comes from his almost ape-like climbing skills, something anyone who has met him can confirm. It was important that his new logo embodied this wild, daring, and fearless nature while maintaining elements of the original design that had sentimental value.

When I saw the existing logo, I knew we had a strong foundation. The menacing red eyes and aggressive stance were a great starting point, but the overall design needed refining. The old logo had a rugged charm, but it lacked polish and a strong visual identity that truly represented Andy’s racing spirit.

Crafting the New Logo

We took the core essence of the original design and elevated it. The new logo features a sleeker, more defined monkey with sharper features and an intense expression. We retained the red eyes to preserve its fierce and intimidating look, ensuring it still reflected Andy’s fearless racing persona.

One of the standout additions was the track scar on the monkey’s face—a subtle but powerful nod to the grit and determination that defines sidecar racing. The checkered pattern surrounding the gorilla not only adds a motorsport feel but also frames the design beautifully, making it instantly recognisable.

But we didn’t stop there. Andy has a deep love for all things 70s and retro, so we designed an additional sepia-toned version with an aged look. This version pays homage to the golden era of motorsports, blending nostalgia with a fresh modern aesthetic.

A Friendship That Started with LARP Bows and Arrows

Working on this project brought back some fantastic memories. I first met Kath and Andy back in 2013 through our mutual friend Jeni, the owner of GB Massage Therapies in Market Drayton. We spent a glorious summer afternoon in the garden, playing with LARP bows and arrows, chasing each other around like a bunch of overgrown kids.

At one point, Andy taunted me, daring me to land an arrow right between his bum cheeks from a rather ambitious distance. Triggering my inner Robin Hood / William Tell, I took the shot—and to everyone’s shock and amusement, I pulled it off! Meanwhile, Kath and I bonded over our shared love of all things Viking, mystical, and mead-related.

The Final Reveal

Seeing Kath’s reaction to the final designs was incredibly rewarding. She knew Andy would love them, and we couldn’t wait to see his response. A logo isn’t just an image—it’s an identity, a representation of passion, and in this case, a tribute to the adrenaline-fueled world of sidecar racing.

This project was a joy to work on, not just because of the creative process but because of the people behind it. It’s always special when you get to design for friends, especially when it’s for something as meaningful as Track Munqui Racing.

So, to Andy—may your races be fast, your corners be smooth, and your logo be as fierce as you are on the track! And to Kath—what a brilliant Valentine’s surprise!
